Top Tips for Making the Switch to Shampoo Bars
Making the switch from plastic-bottled, detergent-based shampoo to our Solid Shampoo Bars can feel like a big leap. To help with the transition, we've put together our best hints and tips on how to get the most from your new, natural, detergent-free shampoo bar and how to ditch the plastic and the products containing SLS, SLES and other harsh detergents for good.

1. You Only Need a Small Amount
Most people initially use too much product when switching from liquid to solid shampoo. We're used to taking a large handful of liquid shampoo (which is incidentally mostly water) that produces a high volume of lather thanks to the detergents it contains. Our solid shampoo bars contain neither water nor detergent, so a completely different approach is needed.
The secret is to use only a very small amount of the concentrated Cosy Cottage solid shampoo. That's all that's needed to clean the hair and scalp effectively and it also means your bars will last a very long time.
2. Build a Gentle Lather
We recommend, especially when you're starting out, building a gentle lather between your hands first and then massaging it into the hair and scalp, rather than rubbing the bar directly onto the hair.
Don't expect the same volume of lather you'd get from a detergent-based shampoo, a high volume of lather is not necessary to clean the hair. Our shampoo bars contain no detergent and no non-naturally derived ingredients. Detergents like SLS strip oils and fats from hair and skin (much like washing a greasy pan with washing-up liquid), and will dry out both hair and scalp and cause hair to break more easily. There have also been studies linking SLS use to various skin conditions. Our bars are different, they lather gently and work with your hair's natural oils rather than against them.
3. Rinse Thoroughly — Especially in Hard Water Areas
Detergents rinse away easily, taking grease, fats and your hair's natural oils with them. With a non-detergent product like our shampoo bars, you'll need to rinse very thoroughly.
In hard water areas, a slight residue can sometimes form, which may take longer to rinse out than you're used to. A mildly acidic final rinse can help, try up to 10% cider vinegar, a little lemon juice, or a few citric acid crystals dissolved in water. As well as removing any hard water residue, cider vinegar is a traditional remedy for shiny, healthy-looking hair.
4. Allow for an Adjustment Period
Perseverance pays off. Many people have a build-up of silicones and other conditioning products on their hair before they start, and as these wash away, the hair can feel different for a short time. Most people report positive results after just 1 or 2 washes, but more may be needed to fully clear the build-up from years of commercial shampoo use.
There's also a natural adjustment period as your scalp recalibrates. SLS strips away your hair's natural oils, which can cause the scalp to overproduce sebum to compensate, leading to greasier hair and, often, an even harsher shampoo being used in response. When you stop using harsh detergents, your scalp no longer needs to overcompensate, and oil production gradually rebalances. This can take anywhere from a few days to a few weeks.
Be patient: the results are worth it. Everyone here at Cosy Cottage uses our shampoo bars, across a full range of hair types from short to long, straight to curly. We're all complete converts.
Frequently Asked Questions About Switching to Shampoo Bars
How long does it take to adjust to a shampoo bar?
Most people notice a positive difference after 1–2 washes. However, if you have significant silicone or product build-up from commercial shampoos, the full adjustment period can take 2–4 weeks. During this time your hair may feel different to usual — this is completely normal and temporary.
Why doesn't my shampoo bar lather as much as my old shampoo?
Conventional shampoos lather heavily because they contain detergents such as SLS. Our shampoo bars are detergent-free, so they produce a gentler, more modest lather. This doesn't mean they're less effective — it simply means they clean without stripping your hair's natural oils.
Can I use a shampoo bar if I live in a hard water area?
Yes — but you may need to rinse more thoroughly. A final rinse with diluted cider vinegar (up to 10%), lemon juice or citric acid crystals dissolved in water can help remove any residue and leave hair feeling clean and shiny.
How long does a Cosy Cottage shampoo bar last?
Because our bars are highly concentrated and you only need a small amount per wash, a single bar typically lasts as long as two or three bottles of liquid shampoo. Exact longevity depends on hair length and frequency of washing.
Are your shampoo bars suitable for all hair types?
Yes — our shampoo bars are used by people with a wide range of hair types, from fine and short to long, thick and curly. They are vegan, free from detergents, SLS, SLES and synthetic additives, and suitable for the whole family.
How should I store my shampoo bar?
Keep your shampoo bar in a well-drained soap dish between uses, away from standing water. Allowing it to dry out between washes will significantly extend its life.

Thank YOUU for sharing the transition phase with shampoo bars! I recently found out about shampoo bars on another blog (they had a good roundup, https://www.sittingprettyhalohair.com/blogs/news/best-shampoo-bars) but its been so hard to find out about the purge phase with these bars! Really informative article :) thanks
I received my shampoo and conditioner bar yesterday and washed my hair immediately and was not impressed. My hair felt greasy and lacked volume. I have very thick dyed “atomic turquoise” hair (to cover my grey, not ready to go grey yet!) Interestingly the shampoo did not wash out any colour which is vegan. After reading the instructions (which I should have done first!) and the other comments, which are very encouraging, I have decided to persevere. I want to help our environment and be chemical free, wherever possible.
Hi everyone, so excited to get started, I have recieved my shampoo bar and conditioner round today, one question please, do I rinse out the vinegar rinse? I’m hoping my transition shouldn’t be too bad as I’ve been following curly girl method for a year, fingers crossed..
Yh I worked out how to use the shampoo and having just received my conditioner realise I have to learn how to use that too! Having really long hair I merrily rubbed it in. Big mistake, have had to rewash my hair and rinse on powershower as it felt like my hair had grown a second skin. Oh well you live and learn. Still having major success with the deo. Thanks!! Stay safe!! Xx
Hi
I find if I apply conditioner sparingly at the start of my shower on wet hair and then shampoo at the end this gives me the best results. Conditioner then shampoo is my tip
