How to use a gua sha with Cosy Cottage

How to get the most from your Gua Sha

We've added a solid jade 'gua sha' tool to our Facial serum products as an option to enable customers to benefit from this traditional beauty and skincare technique.

But what is a gua sha, what does it do and how do I use it, we hear you ask?

What is a gua sha?

Gua sha (gwar-shar) is a traditional Chinese medicine technique that involves moving something across, or 'scraping' across your skin. This is done with a smooth-edged gua sha tool, to help improve circulation and reduce puffiness.

Gua sha practice is believed, according to ancient Chinese medicine, to break up and remobilise stagnant energy within the body. The stagnancy of this internal energy force, called chi, is believed by practitioners to be associated with increased inflammation and exacerbation of inflammatory conditions. Among a diversity of of symptoms, inflammation frequently manifests as puffiness. This puffiness can often be seen in the face, looking like extra roundness of cheeks and jowls and appearing to be similar to the effects of water retention.

Using this traditional and longstanding gua sha tool can help sculpt the face and take away that puffiness.

Results? More definition in the cheekbones, face and jawline.

Where do I use it?

Gua sha is generally used on the face and neck. It can also be used if you wish on the back, buttocks, arms, and legs, where puffiness can also frequently occur.

How do I use my Gua Sha?

You start by applying an oil or serum to the area you want to work on. This helps the tool glide across the skin, stops any dragging or scratching and helps smooth the passage of the gua sha as you scrape in an upward or downward motion.
