Lavender - A Calming Influence

Perhaps the most commonly known and versatile essential oil; lavender has been used throughout history for a variety of purposes. The Ancient Romans used to bathe in water infused with lavender for its disinfecting and relaxing properties. The word itself comes from the latin lavare , meaning “to wash".

In recent years, studies have shown that lavender has the power to reverse hair loss, cure vomiting and deodorise your washing. Lavender is also frequently used as seasoning in breads, meat dishes, drinks and puddings.

We only use the very best, natural ingredients and that includes our essential oils. To show why we love the lavender essential oil so much, we are here to run you through some of the more useful and reliable health benefits of using this oil in everyday life.

Relaxation and Sleep

It has long been said that lavender essential oils can reduce stress and anxiety and science is finally catching up with this notion. Through supplements or aromatherapy, lavender has now been scientifically proven to have a positive impact on your mind. The oil can also improve your quality of sleep. Studies have found that length of sleep, time taken to fall asleep and restfulness all improved with the use of lavender oil before bed. Men and women struggling with insomnia even saw immediate improvements.

According to some studies, many flies and insects despise the smell of lavender and hence the essential oil can be used as an insect repellent. Our Sweet Orange Hand Cream is also good for this.

Antibacterial

Do not fear though, lavender and its wonderful antibacterial properties can stop the itching and disinfect insect bites. Sores have even been reported to heal over much more quickly with the help of our wonderful oil. Lavender's benefits do not stop there - it can help combat various bacterial and fungal infections, speeding up the healing of burns, cuts and wounds. This has been repeatedly confirmed in multiple scientific studies.

Our top tips

For Stress and Anxiety: Rub on temples, forehead, and back of jaw to relieve stress. Alternatively, use as a preventative before entering a stressful environment. Following this ritual can even calm your pounding headache.

For Sleep: Take a warm healing bath with a couple of drops of essential oil. Follow this up by rubbing essential oil or some of our lavender hand and body cream on the back of your neck, temples or chest before you cosy into bed for some deep sleep. The members of the Cosy Cottage team are big fans of this ritual!

As a Repellent: Try burning a small amount of the oil or place lavender plants by your doors to limit the number of insects who come wandering in. Perhaps combine our lavender soap and hand cream to really keep those insects at bay.

For Small Bites, Stings and Cuts: Apply a small amount of the pure essential oil onto the bite and wait for the itching and pain to subside.

For us, it's the wonderfully relaxing scent that we love the most. Check out our full range of lavender essential oil infused products in the shop.

I, like many, love lavender and in all the time I’ve been using it, I didn’t realise it had antibacterial properties, nor that it could be used as an insect repellent, so thank you for this blog (and your beautiful products of course!) Xx
